Google Mail is where you send and receive mail from teachers, and updates from services like G+

It is an expectation that you check your mail at least once per day

Creating Filters

Open Gmail.

  1. In the search box at the top, click the Down arrow .
  2. Enter your search criteria. If you want to check that your search worked correctly, see what emails show up by clicking Search.
  3. At the bottom of the search window, click Create filter.
  4. Choose what you’d like the filter to do.
  5. Click Create filter.

Display Density


Click on the gear icon that appears on the right-hand side of your Gmail window and select Compact which is listed under Display Density. The default Display Density is Comfortable which has the most white space between various interface elements.

Choose your inbox layout

  1. On your computer, go to Gmail.
  2. In the top left, point to Inbox, then click the Down arrow .
  3. Select Default, Important first, Unread first, Starred first, or Priority Inbox.

Set up multiple inboxes

You can turn on up to 5 inboxes based on search terms of your choosing. When created, you can choose to see these inboxes above, below, or to the right of your default inbox.

Step 1: Set your inbox to default view

  1. On your computer, go to Gmail.
  2. Set your inbox type as default. In the top left, point to Inbox, then click the Down arrow .
  3. Select Default click Manage Your Inbox Settings.
  4. Under “Select tabs to enable,” uncheck all boxes next to the tab name and click Save.

Step 2: Turn multiple inboxes on

  1. At the top right, click Settings Settings.
  2. Click Advanced.
  3. Next to “Multiple Inboxes,” click Enable.
  4. At the bottom, click Save Changes.

Step 3: Set up multiple inboxes

  1. At the top right, click Settings Settings.
  2. At the top, click Multiple Inboxes.
  3. To set up an inbox:
    1. Under “Search query,” enter a search operator for the type of emails you want to see, like is:starred for starred emails.
    2. Under “Panel title,” enter a name for the inbox.
    3. Next to “Maximum page size,” enter the number of emails you want to see.
    4. Next to “Extra panels positioning,” choose where you want to find the inbox.
  4. At the bottom, click Save.

Tip: If you multiple inboxes don't appear, check to make sure your search query is entered correctly.

Learn about the inbox layout options

Default (categories or tabs)

If you choose "Default," your inbox will be split up into different tabs, like "Primary," "Social," "Promotions," and "Updates." When you have the "Default" inbox, your messages are automatically sorted into tabs, but you can move messages among categories if you want.

Important first

If you choose "Important first," your inbox will be separated into two sections: "Important" at the top, and "Everything else" at the bottom.

Unread first

If you choose "Unread first," your inbox will be separated into two sections: "Unread" at the top and "Everything else" at the bottom.

Starred first

If you choose "Starred first," your inbox will be separated into two sections: "Starred" at the top, and "Everything else" at the bottom.

Priority Inbox

If you choose "Priority Inbox" your inbox will be separated into multiple sections. You can choose which sections you want to show, including "Important and unread," "Starred," "Everything else," or a label that you have made.

Hide or show list of inboxes & labels

You can find all your inboxes and labels in the left-hand menu. When the left-hand menu is hidden, you’ll have more space for your emails and can point to the menu for more options.

To hide the left-hand menu:

  1. On your computer, go to Gmail.
  2. At the top left, click Menu .

Tip: To show the menu again, click Menu .
